In the world of kapa haka The Te Matatini National Festival reigns supreme! It’s the place where haka groups from around Aotearoa and Australia congregate to see who will wear the title of the Māori world’s top group for the next two years. This biennial event is a must on the Māori social calendar and mixes competition with tradition.Te Matatini 2011 features 42 haka groups representing 13 regions including Australia, competing in a highly skilled and disciplined demonstration of the Māori performing Arts. The Festival is regarded as the ‘premier Māori cultural performing arts festival’. It is the world’s largest celebration of Māori performing arts, showcasing Māori culture and talent attracting upwards of 30,000 participants and visitors. The performance stage is set alight with a mixture of waiata, haka and chants with the very best of Māori performance and pageantry. Te Matatini recognises the strength of diversity among Māori tribes, hapū and whānau, while equally encouraging all to come together and celebrate as one.
